Technology and Equipment

The Police Department utilizes a local area network or "LAN" as well as a wide area network or "WAN". The computer system is set up with Windows 2000© workstations on a Windows2000© network. All in-house workstations and servers are provided by Dell Computer.

In May, 2001, the Berkeley Heights Police Department went live on NCIC2000. This new technology greatly enhances our ability to retrieve background information on suspected criminals. In addition, NCIC2000 enable Police Department personnel to identify suspected offenders through fingerprints instantly by electronically scanning the fingerprint with a Crossmatch Fingerprint Scanner and transmitting the data directly to the State Police and FBI computers for an immediate comparison. Persons suspected of providing false identities will be easily positively identified and checked for outstanding arrest warrants.

The Patrol fleet is comprised of Ford Crown Victoria cruisers. The patrol cars are being outfitted with mobile data computers from Data 9-1-1. Our officers will have the ability to communicate directly with the state and federal criminal information databases. They will also be able to write reports and transmit information without having to leave their patrol districts.
