Drug Abuse Resistance Education
Detective Mark Stallone is the D.A.R.E. Officer for the Berkeley Heights Police Department. When Detective Stallone isn't in the classroom teaching children, he can often be scene riding his police bicycle throughout the township. Detective Stallone is also the Juvenile Officer for the Police Department, charged with investigating all crimes involving all suspects under the age of 18.
The D.A.R.E. Curriculum
The D.A.R.E. curriculum is a 17 week program designed to "prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth". This is taught to all fifth grade students in the Berkeley Heights school system. These students are presented with tools to deal with peer pressure, provided opportunities to meet positive role models, and solve problems utilizing cooperative learning.
History of D.A.R.E. in Berkeley Heights
The Berkeley Heights Police Department D.A.R.E. Program started during the 1992-1993 school year. Sergeant Michael Mathis was the first D.A.R.E. instructor on staff. In 1996, Detective Mark Stallone began teaching the D.A.R.E. program. Between Sergeant Mathis and Detective Stallone, these highly trained officers who have taught and successfully lead approximately 1600 students to a D.A.R.E. graduation. |
