February 8, 2006 

Berkeley Heights Police Chief David L. Zager announced today that the Police Department will host an “Accreditation Recognition Ceremony” on Tuesday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m. at Town Hall and invited the public to attend.  The ceremony will take place prior to the regularly scheduled Township Committee meeting.  “The purpose of the recognition ceremony is two fold”, Chief Zager explained in a prepared release.  “We want to educate the public about the accreditation process, what is involved and what it means to the Police Department and to the community we serve.  In addition, this will be an opportunity for me to recognize the men and women who worked so hard over the last two years to accomplish this great accomplishment.”  Chief Zager announced that representatives of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, who sponsored the Accreditation program in conjunction with C.A.L.E.A., a national accreditation body, will be in attendance to present the Mayor and Chief with the Accreditation certificate.  Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow will be the keynote speaker. “We’re also going to have an ‘open house’ and allow the public an opportunity to see the ‘inner workings’ of the Police Department.  We’re planning to make this a very special evening for everyone.”  Chief Zager advised that further details will be released when they become available.

February 6, 2006 

On Monday, January 30, 2006 at 10:34 am, Ptl Daniel Cuocci arrested and charged Andrea F. Young, 33, of Plainfield with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, obstruction of view, careless driving, driving while suspended, and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle motor vehicle.  Young was the operator of a 1989 Honda that was stopped for equipment and moving violations.  Young was found to hold an outstanding warrant out of Phillipsburg for $732.00 and 2 no bail warrants out of Union County.  Ptl. Cuocci placed him under arrest and subsequently found a small amount of marijuana in his possession.  Young was brought to police headquarters where he was processed and charged.  Bail was set at $2,500.00 by Berkeley Heights Municipal Court Judge Donald Bogosian and Young was subsequently turned over to the Union County Sheriffs Department and lodged in the Union County Jail. 

On Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at 3:26 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Kevin Kerr, 19, of Plainfield with speeding, reckless driving, improper passing and eluding police.  Kerr was the operator of a 2003 Honda that Ptl. DeSimoni initially attempted to stop for a speeding violation.  Kerr ignored Ptl. DeSimoni’s attempts to stop him and initially fled from police, causing a short pursuit, and eventually was stopped on Valley Road in Watchung.  Kerr was arrested and brought to police headquarters and processed.  Kerr was then released and given a court date to appear in Union County Superior Court on February 10, 2006. 

On Thursday, February 2, 2006 at 2:53 pm Berkeley Heights Police investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Plainfield Ave. near the Connell flyover.  The investigation revealed that a 1997 GMC Flatbed truck, operated by Milan M. Kubik, 64, of Greenbrook, failed to negotiate a bend in the roadway as its load shifted.  The truck was carrying 15,000 pounds of metal moldings. The accident caused Plainfield Ave. to be closed for approximately 3 hours, due to the truck overturning.  The vehicle and debris were removed from the scene and the driver, who had to be extricated from the wreckage, was transported to Morristown Memorial Hospital with head injuries.  Assisting at the scene were the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad, Berkeley Heights and Summit Fire Departments, and Paramedics from Overlook Hospital.  The accident was investigated by Traffic Officer Michael Delia. 

On Friday, February 03, 2006 at 2:06 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Mark C. Nolan, 22, of Maplewood with motor vehicle charges.  Nolan was the operator of a 2000 Saturn that was stopped for a moving violation.  Nolan was subsequently placed under arrest for DWI and brought to police headquarters and processed.  He was charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Nolan was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a friend. 

On Friday, February 3, 2006 at 11:51 pm, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Michael R. Miczewski, 35, of Clark with speeding, improper maintenance of lamps and driving while intoxicated.  Miczewski was the operator of a 2000 Lincoln that was stopped for a moving violation.  Miczewski was subsequently placed under arrest for DWI and brought to police headquarters where he was processed.  Miczewski was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a friend. 

On Saturday, February 4, 2006 at 2:02 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Domingo A. Villar, 32, of Haledon with obstructed view, driving while suspended, failure to exhibit an insurance card and failure to signal a turn.  Villar was the operator of a 1998 Toyota that was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was subsequently found to hold a no bail warrant out of Union County and one $800.00 warrant out of North Hunterdon.  He was placed under arrest and brought to police headquarters where he was processed.  Villar was then turned over to the Union County Sheriffs Department and transported to the Union County Jail. 

On Sunday, February 5, 2006 at 12:51 am, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Johnny R. Jordan, 31, of Plainfield with motor vehicle charges. Jordan was the operator of a 1990 Oldsmobile and was found to hold a no bail warrant out of Union County and several warrants out of Dover totaling $3623.00.  He was placed under arrest and brought to police headquarters and processed.  Jordan was then turned over to the Union County Sheriffs Department and transported to the Union County Jail.

January 30, 2006 

On Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at 9:27 pm, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Thomas J. Festa, 34, of Bedminster with criminal charges.  Festa was a passenger on a NJ Transit train that had stopped at the Berkeley Heights Train Station.  Ptl. Minicozzi responded to the area after NJ Transit Police advised police headquarters that an individual was allegedly smoking marijuana on the train.  The investigation revealed that Festa had a glass smoking pipe with CDS residue in his possession.  Festa was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.  Festa was given a court date of February 2, 2006 and released on his own recognizance. 

On Thursday, January 26, 2006 at 3:32 pm, Ptl. Andrew Glaydura arrested and charged Hector Perez, 36, of Perth Amboy with criminal and motor vehicle charges.  Perez was the operator of a 1995 Saturn that was stopped due to a cracked windshield.  During the course of the stop, Ptl. Glaydura detected an odor of burnt marijuana and Perez was found to have a small amount of marijuana in his possession.  Perez was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with operating a motor vehicle with a cracked windshield and possession of under 50 grams of marijuana.  Perez was given a court date of February 2, 2006 and released on his own recognizance. 

On Friday, January 27, 2006 at 8:06 am, Ptl. Andrew Glaydura investigated a three car accident which occurred on Snyder Avenue.  The investigation revealed that the three vehicles were following one another on Snyder Ave. in a north bound direction.  Victoria Manning, 44, of Berkeley Heights was operating a 2000 Ford and had come to a stop in traffic.  Barbara Johnson, 58, of North Plainfield, was operating a 2003 Dodge and was directly behind the Manning vehicle, at which time she came to a stop.  The accident occurred when Jerome Rosenblum, 82, of Watchung who was operating a 2005 Dodge, was not able to come to a stop before striking the Johnson vehicle in the rear, which in turn pushed the Johnson vehicle into the Manning vehicle.  All three vehicles were able to be driven away from the scene.

On Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 4:07 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested Michael E. Nichols, 38, of Easton PA, after receiving a report of a hit and run accident which occurred on Interstate 78.  Ptl. Gallaro was able to locate Nichols vehicle after receiving a description from police headquarters.  Nichols was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated and transported to police headquarters.  New Jersey State Police then responded to Berkeley Heights and took Nichols into custody.

January 25, 2006 

On Wednesday, January 18, 2006, Ptl. Michael Nelson responded to a Princeton Ave. address to investigate a report of a vehicle that had been broken into.  The investigation revealed that a 2005 Nissan had been forcibly broken into during the overnight hours between 11:30 pm and 7:25 am.  Various personal items were taken from the motor vehicle which included a briefcase and a checkbook. The incident has been referred to the Investigations Division. 

On Thursday, January 19, 2006 at 9:38 am, Ptl. Andrew Glaydura arrested and charged Ebony L. Nevius, 29, of Plainfield with motor vehicle violations.  Nevius was the operator of a 1995 Plymouth and was found to hold an outstanding warrant out of Somerville for several counts of forgery and theft by deception.  She was arrested and brought to police headquarters and charged with improper maintenance of lamps.  Nevius was processed and then released into the custody of the Somerville Police Department. 

On Friday, January 20, 2006 at 8:55 pm, Ptl. Dan Gara arrested and charged Shawn R. Funk, 29, of Scotch Plains with motor vehicle charges.  Funk was the operator of a 1998 Jeep and when stopped was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.  Funk was placed under arrest and brought to police headquarters and processed.  Funk was charged with driving while intoxicated and improper left turn.  He was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a family member. 

On Tuesday, January 24, 2006 members of the Berkeley Heights Police Department responded to three separate one car motor vehicle accidents within a twenty five minute time period.  All three accidents were caused by black ice.  At 7:28 am, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni responded to McMane Ave. and found that Ryan J. Arroyo, 19, of Basking Ridge had lost control of his 1995 Pontiac Grand Am upon contacting black ice on the roadway and striking a curb.  The vehicle was disabled and removed by a tow truck. At 7:49 am, Ptl. William Ives responded to Plainfield Ave. near Connell Dr. and found that Jose Fernandez, 28, of New York, NY, had lost control of his 1997 Nissan Altima due to black ice and collided with a guard rail, causing heavy front end damage.  The vehicle was towed from the scene.  At 7:54 am, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci and Sgt. John DiPasquale responded to Glenside Ave. to investigate a report of an overturned motor vehicle.   The investigation found that Nicole M. Hines, 30, of Summit, had lost control of her 1994 Pontiac Grand Am due to black ice, striking an embankment, causing the vehicle to overturn.  The driver was entrapped in the motor vehicle and was extricated by members of the Berkeley Heights Fire Department.  The driver was then transported to Overlook Hospital with neck injuries by the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad.  The vehicle was towed from the scene sustaining passenger side and roof damage.

January 17, 2005 

The Berkeley Heights Police Department is investigating two separate residential burglaries that were reported this past weekend.   

On Friday, January 13, 2006, Ptl. William Ives and Det. Patrick Moran responded to a Wentworth Drive address to investigate a reported burglary.  The reporting party advised that the incident occurred between Tuesday, January 3rd and Friday, January 13th, 2006.  The amount of stolen proceeds were not able to be determined as of yet. 

On Sunday, January 15, 2006, Ptl. Williams Ives and Det. Joseph Williams responded to a Spice Hill Rd. address to investigate a reported burglary.  The victim reported that the incident occurred between Saturday, January 14th and Sunday, January 15th, 2006.  Among the items stolen were a 2005 Subaru along with 2 laptops and a computer printer.  The Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding these incidents to contact the Investigations Division at (908)464-1111. 

On Sunday, January 15, 2006 at 9:19 pm, Ptl. Ed Ammerlaan and Ptl. Brian Jordan responded to a vacant Grassman Pl. address to investigate a report of a suspicious person.  Upon their arrival, they determined that numerous juveniles were on the premises in possession of alcoholic beverages.  Officers took 30 juveniles into custody along with one adult; Michael Plaia, 18, of Berkeley Heights.  The juveniles were turned over to the custody of their parents and released and will be referred to the Youth Aid Unit. 

On Monday, January 16, 2006, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Ronald Polanco, 18, of East Stroudsburg PA with motor vehicle charges.  Polanco was the operator of a 2003 Nissan and was stopped after Ptl. DeSimoni conducted a random computer check which revealed that Polanco was wanted on outstanding warrants out of Allamuchy and Bridgewater totaling $939.00.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with driving while suspended, uninsured motorist and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.  Polanco was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released after posting bail.

January 12, 2006 

On Monday, January 9, 2006 at 9:40 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Shantena J. Fleming, 30, of Hillside with motor vehicle charges.  Fleming was the operator of a 2000 Saturn that was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was found to hold an outstanding warrant in the amount of $500.00 out of Livingston.  Fleming was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with speeding and driving while suspended.  Fleming was subsequently released after posting bail. 

On Monday, January 9, 2006 at 3:24 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Michael R. Rowe, 34, of North Plainfield with motor vehicle charges.  Rowe was the operator of a 2002 Ford and was stopped after Sgt. Deitch conducted a random license plate inquiry on his patrol car computer which showed that Rowe held an outstanding warrant in the amount of $180.00 out of Hillside.  Rowe was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with driving while suspended.  Rowe was subsequently released after posting bail. 

On Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at 8:21 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Joaquim A. Moreira, 50, of Newark with motor vehicle violation. Moreira was the operator of a 1993 Ford that was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was found to hold and outstanding warrant in the amount of $1,000.00 out of Mountainside.  Moreira was brought to police headquarters and charged with improper maintenance of lamps, failure to exhibit documents, and driving while suspended.  Moreira was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and was released after posting bail. 

On Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at 5:39 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Shi-Lid L. Hannah, 34, of Maplewood with criminal charges.  Hannah was the operator of a 1990 Ford that was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was found to found to hold an outstanding warrant in the amount of $376.00 out of Plainfield.  Hannah also presented a fraudulent insurance card to Sgt. Deitch and was subsequently placed under arrest.  He was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged with possession of a fraudulent insurance card.  Hannah was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released after posting bail. 

Berkeley Heights Police are investigating three separate thefts of Xenon headlights which occurred on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at approximately 12:21 pm.  While officers were investigating the first incident on Diamond Hill Road, involving a 2002 Infiniti’s Xenon headlights being stolen, police headquarters received a report from Lucent Technologies, 600 Mountain Ave., of a theft in progress from it’s premises.  The reporting party advised that 4 black males, operating a silver Audi station wagon broke into another 2002 Infiniti and stole it’s Xenon headlights leaving the scene.  A third report of a theft was received at 1:06 pm from a Valley Road corporate complex.  The victim advised officers that Xenon headlights were stolen from his 2005 Lexus.  The value of all three thefts is approximately $6,299.00 and were referred to the Investigations Division.

January 5, 2006 

Berkeley Heights Police Chief David L. Zager, in a prepared statement, announced that Ptl. Edward M. Gaffney, who began his Police Academy Training in July, successfully graduated with the 93rd Academy Class from the John H. Stamler Police Academy on December 8th.  Ptl. Gaffney was appointed as a Police Recruit after participating in a competitive test for the position in June of 2004. 

Ptl. Gaffney, a lifelong resident of Berkeley Heights, served as a Military Police Officer with the United States Marine Corps after he graduated Governor Livingston High School in 1993.  After completing his tour of duty with the Marine Corps, Ptl. Gaffney served in the Army National Guard.  Prior to attending the Police Academy Ptl. Gaffney served as a Civilian Communications Officer with the Berkeley Heights Police Department. 

“The residents of Berkeley Heights are extremely fortunate to have an Officer of Ed Gaffney’s caliber in service to the Community.  Ed is the second Police Officer hired from the test given in June of 2004 to win the Police Academy’s Merit Award.  The Merit Award is one of the Academy’s highest honors, given to the recruit voted by the class as the Police Officer the recruits would select to be their partner.  In addition, Ptl. Gaffney was selected as the class Guide, who is the officer that all squad leaders report to during the twenty weeks of Academy training.  Ptl. Gaffney was recognized by both the recruit class and the Chief of the Academy for his outstanding leadership.”  Ptl. Gaffney’s brother Frank, a Sergeant with the New Providence Police Department, held the Bible during the swearing-in ceremony.

 

From December 24, 2005 to January 3, 2006, members of the Berkeley Heights Police Department arrested 7 drivers who were charged with Driving While Intoxicated.  The following individuals were processed and released and given court dates to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court:

Alexander F. Schneider, 20, Union

Leiliana C. Dasilva, 25, Newark

George O. Akerblom, 53, New Providence

Jerahmeel J. Blair, 23, Scotch Plains

On Saturday, December 31, 2005, at 1:03 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged William Bulger Jr., 45, of Manville with criminal and motor vehicle offenses.  Bulger was the operator of a 1989 Oldsmobile that was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper maintenance of lamps, failure to signal, and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.  Bulger was then released on his own recognizance. 

On Tuesday, January 3, 2006, Sgt. Brad Countryman and Det. Patrick Moran investigated a burglary of a Sunset Lane residence.  The investigation revealed that the burglary occurred between December 29th and January 3rd.  Various types of electronic equipment were taken with an unknown value at the time of the initial report.  The incident has been referred to the Investigations Division. 

On Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at 8:14 am, Ptl. Ed Gaffney responded to a Deerpath residence and arrested Maria Powers, 27, of Berkeley Heights on an outstanding warrant out of Dover Municipal Court in the amount of $3000.00.  Powers was brought to police headquarters and processed and released after posting bail. 

On Wednesday, January 4, 2006 , at 10:30 pm, Sgt. Brad Countryman arrested and charged Anthony S. Figgs, 35, of Plainfield with motor vehicle violations.  Figgs was the operator of a 1988 Acura that was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  Figgs was found to hold an outstanding warrant in the amount of $2,640.00 out of Plainfield and was brought to police headquarters and processed.  He was charged with improper maintenance of lamps and driving while suspended.  Figgs was then turned over to Plainfield Police Department.

December 22, 2005 

On Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at 11:53 am, Ptl. Brian Jordan arrested and charged Lali Tsiklauri, 35, of Berkeley Heights with criminal charges.  Tsiklauri was arrested for shoplifting from Drug Fair when she attempted to leave the store without paying for merchandise totaling $32.20.  She was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with shoplifting.  Tsikklauri was released on her own recognizance and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 12:40 am, Ptl. Ernie Schmidt arrested and charged Eric D. DeVine, 23, of Summit with motor vehicle charges.  DeVine was the operator of a 1999 Chrysler that was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  He was found to be operating the vehicle while intoxicated and brought to police headquarters and processed.  DeVine was charged with reckless driving, failure to signal and driving while intoxicated.  He was then released with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

December 19, 2005 

On Friday, December 16, 2005 at 11:16 pm, Ptl. Ernest Schmidt arrested and charged Byron Salazar, 50, of Bridgewater with driving while intoxicated.  Salazar was the operator of a 2002 Audi that was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was subsequently placed under arrest for DWI.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with improper maintenance of lamps, careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Salazar was then released into the custody of a family member and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Saturday, December 17, 2005 at 2:30 am, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Mario Tehlikan, 48, of Whitehouse Station with driving while intoxicated.  Tehlikan was the operator of a 1998 Nissan that was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was subsequently placed under arrest for DWI.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and driving while intoxicated.  Tehlikan was later released into the custody of a friend and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Sunday, December 18, 2005 at 2:53 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Gwendolyn Gorham, 40, of North Plainfield with driving while intoxicated.  Gorham was the operator of a 1986 Oldsmobile that was stopped for a motor vehicle violation and was subsequently placed under arrest for DWI.  She was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Gorham was then released to a family member and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Monday, December 19, 2005 at 2:01 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Kyle B. Craven, 23, of Bridgewater with driving while intoxicated.  Craven was the operator of a 2005 Chevy that was stopped for a motor vehicle violation and was subsequently placed under arrest for DWI.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Craven was then released into the custody of a friend and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

December 5, 2005 

On Monday, November 28, 2005, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi investigated a report of a theft from a motor vehicle.  The victim reported that his camcorder valued at $400.00 was stolen from his vehicle while it was parked at the Shop and Stop Supermarket on Springfield Ave.  The incident occurred within a 15 minute time period and the vehicle had been left unlocked.  The incident has been referred to the Investigations Division. 

On Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at 9:05 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Shunta R. Anderson, 34, of Hillside.  Anderson was the operator of a 2000 Mitsubishi and when stopped was found to hold an outstanding warrant in the amount of $466.00 out of New Providence.  Anderson was transported to the New Providence Police Department and was charged with driving while suspended and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.  She was then released into the custody of the New Providence Police Department. 

On Tuesday, November 29, 2005 at 12:10 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Robert T. Giarrusso, 37, of Lyndhurst with motor vehicle charges.  Giarruso was the operator of a 2001 Jeep that was stopped for a motor vehicle offense and was found to hold an outstanding warrant in the amount of $500.00 out of Passaic.  Giarrusso was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with failure to inspect and driving while suspended.  He was then released with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court after posting bail. 

On Wednesday, November 30, 2005, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci investigated a report of criminal mischief at the Columbia Park ice skating rink.  The investigation revealed that an unknown person or persons damaged a recently constructed wall by removing and breaking multiple bricks.  The incident occurred during the overnight hours and has been referred to the Investigations Division.

November 28, 2005 

On Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at 2:18 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Michael F. Issenman, 27, of Berkeley Heights with motor vehicle violations.  Issenman was the operator of a 1999 Saturn and was found to hold outstanding warrants in the amount of $1017.00 out of Morris Township, Wanaque Boro, and Westfield.  He was brought to police headquarters and charged with reckless driving, driving while suspended, improper display of plates, cracked windshield and failure to inspect.  Issenman was given a court date to appear in Berkley Heights Municipal Court and was released after posting bail. 

On Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at 1:28 pm, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci responded to a Springholm Dr. residence and took a 17 year old juvenile into custody for possession of CDS.  The juvenile was found to be in possession of two small bags of marijuana, two marijuana pipes and rolling papers.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.  The juvenile was then released into the custody of a parent with a court date to appear in Union County Family Court. 

On Wednesday, November 23, 2005 at 11:16 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Caitlin Mangold, 20, of Berkeley Heights with motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Mangold was the operator of a 1994 Jeep that was stopped for a motor vehicle violation.  Upon investigation, Sgt. Deitch detected an odor of burnt marijuana and subsequently found marijuana in Mangold’s possession.  Mangold was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with improper maintenance of lamps and possession of under 50 grams of marijuana.  She was then released with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 1:21 am, Ptl. Ernest Schmidt arrested and charged David Gallo, 29, of Jersey City with motor vehicle charges.  Gallo was the operator of a 1991 Jeep and was found to be operating the vehicle while intoxicated.  Gallo was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  He was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a friend. 

On Thursday, November 24, 2005 at 1:51 am, Ptl. Brian Jordan and Ptl. Ernest Schmidt arrested and charged Albert M. Openshaw, 25, and Philip Macarelli, 20, both of Berkeley Heights with criminal charges.  Ptl. Jordan approached Openshaw in a Springfield Avenue parking lot after observing him kick a car door.  Upon approaching him, Openshaw became violent and began to curse at and fight with Ptl. Jordan.  Openshaw was subsequently subdued with the assistance of Sgt. Robert Deitch.   A crowd began to gather and Ptl. Ernest Schmidt ordered dispersal of the crowd, at which time Macarelli refused to comply and also began to curse, yell and approach the officers as they subdued the first subject.  Macarelli was then taken into custody as he defied Ptl. Schimdt’s orders and pulled away from his grasp.  Both were brought to police headquarters and processed. Openshaw was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest, simple assault, and disorderly conduct. Macarelli was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and interfering with a law enforcement officer.  Both were given court dates to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and were later released. 

On Saturday, November 26, 2005 at 2:25 am, Ptl. Dan Gara arrested and charged Dominick Boyd, 25, Jason M. Washington, 22, and Marian S. Showell, 26, all of Allentown PA, with motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Boyd was the operator of a 1992 Mercury that was stopped for a motor vehicle violation.  While speaking with him, Ptl. Gara detected an odor of burnt marijuana emanating from him at which time Boyd admitted to smoking marijuana earlier.  All three individuals were then found to have marijuana in their possession.  They were brought to police headquarters and charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana.  Boyd was also charged with improper maintenance of lamps and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.  All three were then released with court dates to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Saturday, November 26, 2005 at 3:31 am, Ptl. Ed Ammerlaan arrested and charged Sean Carmody, 18, of Berkeley Heights.  Carmody was the operator of a 2004 Nissan that was involved in a one car accident on Timber Drive.  Upon investigation, Ptl. Ammerlaan determined Carmody to be under the influence of alcohol.  The Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad transported him to Overlook Hospital where he was treated and a blood sample was taken.  Carmody was charged with driving while intoxicated, underage driver with BAC between .01 and .09% BAC and open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle. 

On Saturday, November 26, 2005 at 11:34 am, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni investigated a report of a theft from a Springfield Avenue nursery.  The victim reported a holiday wreath valued at approximately $30.00 was stolen from the premises between the hours of 7:00 pm Friday, November 25th and 11:30 am, Saturday, November 26th.  The incident has been referred to the Investigations Division. 

On Saturday, November 26, 2005 at 1:26 pm, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Juanita Roberson, 31, of East Orange with motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Roberson was the operator of a 1996 Nissan that was stopped for motor vehicle violations at which time she was found to hold outstanding warrants out of Kearney and East Orange in the amount of $300.00.  Officers requested Roberson step out of the vehicle to be placed under arrest at which time she refused to comply with the officer’s command and was subsequently forcibly removed and handcuffed.  Roberson was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with hindering apprehension, resisting arrest, driving while suspended, improper maintenance of lamps and failure to make repairs on the motor vehicle.  Roberson was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and was released after posting bail. 

On Sunday, November 27, 2005 at 10:13 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Jay Jones, 21, of Reading PA with criminal and motor vehicle charges.  Upon speaking with Jones, Sgt. Deitch detected an odor of burnt marijuana, and a subsequent search revealed a small amount of marijuana and two crack cocaine pipes in the vehicle.  Jones was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding, failure to keep right, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, and no registration in possession.

October 26, 2005 

On Monday, October 24, 2005 at 10:07 am, Ptl. William Ives arrested and charged Shawn Whitehead, 45, of Ringoes NJ with motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Whitehead was the operator of a 1998 Chevy pick up truck that was stopped after making an illegal turn.  Upon stopping Whitehead, he was unable to produce identification and was subsequently found to be in possession of marijuana, crack cocaine, crack pipes and rolling papers.  He was arrested and brought to police headquarters where he was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, improper u-turn, and driving while suspended.  Bail was set at $1,000.00 by Berkeley Heights Municipal Court Judge Donald Bogosian and Whitehead was released after posting bail.  

On Monday, October 24, 2005 at 10:52 am, Ptl. Andrew Glaydura responded to a Springholm Dr. address to investigate a report of criminal mischief and an attempted theft of a motor vehicle.  His investigation revealed that an unknown actor or actors attempted to gain entry to a 2004 Lexus between the hours of 6:00 pm and 8:00 am.  The driver’s side door lock was punched and left lying on the ground; however entry was not gained to the motor vehicle.

October 24, 2005 

On Sunday, October 16, 2005 at 2:39 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Gretchen M. Solich, 33, of Basking Ridge with DWI.  Solich was the operator of a 1996 Nissan and after being stopped for a motor vehicle violation, she was found to be intoxicated.  Solich was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged with DWI, speeding, and careless driving.  She was then given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a friend. 

On Tuesday, October 18, 2005, Ptl. Jeanne Marie Mocarski responded to Governor Livingston High School to investigate a report of a theft.  Upon speaking with the victim, the student reported that her wallet containing $50.00 was stolen from her backpack sometime during the school day.  The matter has been referred to the Investigations Division.

September 30, 2005

Berkeley Heights Police Chief David L. Zager announced in a prepared statement today that Ptl. Ernest Schmidt, an eight year veteran of the Police Department, was deployed to New Orleans as part of a Union County contingent of S.W.A.T. Officers.  Ptl. Schmidt left for New Orleans on Tuesday, September 27 and is expected to be deployed for approximately fourteen days. “Ptl. Schmidt is a highly trained member of the Union County S.W.A.T. team and is capable of performing a wide range of police functions.  He serves as a Department Firearms Officer as well as a Field Training Officer, so I’m sure his skills will be put to good use while he’s deployed.  As is the case with all of the Officers deployed to assist the citizens of New Orleans, Ptl. Schmidt is making a tremendous personal sacrifice.  I am extremely proud of Ptl. Schmidt and am confident that his presence will be a great asset to the efforts of Law Enforcement during the recovery period.”

September 29, 2005 

On Saturday, September 24, 2005 at 12:18 pm, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Taji A. Lewis, 34, of Maplewood, with motor vehicle offenses.  Lewis was the operator of a 2000 Nissan and when stopped for motor vehicle offenses was found to hold an outstanding warrant out of Newark in the amount of $7000.00.  She was transported to police headquarters and charged with driving while suspended and obstruction of vision.  Lewis was then turned over to Newark Police Academy.   

On Sunday, September 25, 2005, Ptl. Jeanne Marie Mocarski responded to a Holly Glen Lane address to investigate a motor vehicle theft.  Upon arrival, it was determined that the resident’s 2003 Cadillac Deville was stolen between the hours of 12:00 am and 2:00 am.  The vehicle was entered as stolen and was recovered later in the day in Newark after a police pursuit.  The suspect was not captured at the time of the pursuit. 

On Thursday, September 29, 2005, at 1:41 am Ptl. Daniel Gara arrested and charged George Battle, 25, and a 17 year old juvenile, both from Plainfield, with motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Battle was the operator of a 2000 Nissan and led police on a brief pursuit before becoming involved in a minor motor vehicle accident.  Both individuals were then placed under arrest and subsequently were found to be in possession of marijuana and packaging materials. Battle and the juvenile were processed at police headquarters at which time the juvenile was released into the custody of a family member with juvenile complaints pending.  Battle was charged with improper left turn, reckless driving, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, eluding police, and possession of CDS with intent to distribute.  Bail was set at $1,500.00 by Berkeley Heights Municipal Court Judge Donald Bogosian and Battle was given a court date to appear in Superior Court in Elizabeth. 

On Thursday, September 29, 2005, at 3:37 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested David S. Rottman, 38, of Berkeley Heights, while checking the downtown train station on routine patrol.  Rottman was observed walking away from the train station and when approached by the officer, attempted to avoid him.  Upon contacting the subject, the officer was able to determine that he held an outstanding no bail warrant out of Union County and two outstanding Scotch Plains warrants totaling $1,821.00.  Rottman was brought to police headquarters and processed and later turned over to the Union County Sheriffs Office.

September 19, 2005 

On Saturday, September 17, 2005, at 0100 Hrs., Ptl. Brian Jordan arrested and charged Jendrey J. Artiga-Archila, 24, of Elizabeth with DWI.  Artiga-Archila was the operator of a 2003 Toyota and was initially stopped for motor vehicle violations, at which time Ptl. Jordan determined that he was under the influence of alcohol.  Artiga-Archila was brought to police headquarters and processed and was charged with driving while intoxicated, improper turn, speeding, failure to maintain lane, and driving while suspended.  He was later released into the custody of a friend and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Saturday, September 17, 2005, at 10:58 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged April R. Morris, 44, of Piscataway with motor vehicle and criminal violations. Morris was the operator of a 1995 Pontiac that was stopped for motor vehicle violations at which time she provided false information to Sgt. Deitch regarding her identity.  Her true ID was revealed and she was found to hold an outstanding warrant out of South Plainfield in the amount of $793.00.   She was brought to police headquarters and charged with hindering apprehension, driving while suspended, and having a child under eight not restrained in a booster seat.  Morris was then released with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court after posting bail. 

On Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 5:04 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Tamakisha Caesar, 32, of Union with motor vehicle and criminal violations.  Caesar was the operator of a 1998 Ford and was initially stopped for motor vehicle violations.  She then presented a fraudulent insurance card and was also found to hold outstanding warrants from Newark and South Plainfield totaling $1026.00.  She was brought to police headquarters and charged with possession of a fraudulent insurance card, failure to make repairs, driving while suspended, suspended registration and having no liability insurance.  Caesar was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal court and released after posting bail.

September 8, 2005 

On Saturday, September 3, 2005, at 12:03 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Benjamin M. Adams, 18, and a 17 year old juvenile, both from Berkeley Heights, with motor vehicle and drug charges.  Adams was the operator of a 1995 Toyota, that was stopped for motor vehicle violation at which time both parties were found to have under 50 grams of marijuana in their possession.  Adams and the juvenile were transported to police headquarters and processed.  Adams was charged with Possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, failure to deliver CDS to a law enforcement officer, improper maintenance of lamps, violation of provisional driver’s license, and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.  The juvenile was released to his guardian with juvenile charges pending that have been referred to the Youth Aid Unit. 

On Saturday, September 3, 2005 at 1:33 am, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi responded to Plainfield Ave and Connell Drive, on a report of a one car motor vehicle accident.  The investigation revealed that Jay J. Derafele, 23, of West Milford, was operating a 2002 Volkswagon, traveling north on Plainfield Ave, when his vehicle struck the curb, crossing over Plainfield Ave., coming to rest after striking a guardrail.  Derafele was charged with careless driving and improper display of license plates and given a date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Saturday, September 3, 2005, Ptl. Michael Nelson responded to the Berkeley Swim Club to investigate a burglary.  The investigation revealed that the burglary had occurred overnight between the hours of 6:15 pm and 10:35 am.  Approximately $200.00 had been reported stolen and the incident is under investigation by the Investigations Division. 

On Sunday, September 4, 2005 at 6:57 pm, Ptl. Michael Gallaro, Ptl. Michael Nelson and members of the Berkeley Heights Fire Department responded to a Park Edge residence on a report of a smoke condition.  The investigation revealed that the resident had burned food on her stove which had caught fire.  The fire department extinguished the fire and was able to vent the remaining smoke form the residence. 

On Wednesday, September 7, 2005, at 10:06 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Michael S. Adeyemo, 42, of Piscataway, with motor vehicle violations.  Adeyemo was the operator of a 2000 Toyota that was stopped improper maintenance of lamps and was found to have an outstanding warrant in the amount of $1,500.00 out of Piscataway.  He was brought to police headquarters and charged with driving while suspended and improper maintenance of lamps.  Adeyemo was unable to post bail and was subsequently turned over to the Piscataway Police Department.

September 1, 2005 

On Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 12:23 pm, Ptl. Andrew Glaydura arrested and charged a 16 year old Springfield resident with drug charges.  The juvenile was a passenger in a motor vehicle that was stopped by Ptl. Glaydura and was found to be in possession of under 50 grams of marijuana.  The juvenile was brought to police headquarters and was referred to the Youth Aid unit, and charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana on a juvenile delinquency complaint.  The juvenile was then released to his parents. 

On Monday, August 29, 2005, at 1:42 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Joel M. Rivera, 44, of Waterbury, CT and Jose R. Cordova, 19, of Plainfield, with motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Rivera was the operator of a Chevy Cavalier, which Ptl. Gallaro observed was being operated erratically.  Upon checking the Connecticut registration, the license plates were found to have been reported stolen.  The vehicle was stopped and the occupants were placed under arrest.  Rivera was found to be operating the vehicle while intoxicated and Cordova was subsequently found to be in possession of suspected cocaine.  Both individuals were brought to police headquarters and processed.  Rivera was charged with receiving stolen property, driving while intoxicated, open container of alcohol in a vehicle, unlicensed driver, careless driving, fictitious plates, no insurance and operating an unregistered vehicle. Rivera’s bail was set at $10,000.00 by Judge Donald Bogosian.  Cordova was charged with receiving stolen property and possession of cocaine.  He was also found to hold outstanding warrants out of North Plainfield totaling $1,000.00.  Cordova’s bail was set at $3,500.00 by Judge Donald Bogosisan.  Both subjects were then transported to the Union County Jail. 

On Monday, August 29, 2005, at 2:46 pm, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci arrested and charged Tijuana T. Thompson, 20, of Jersey City with criminal charges.  Thompson was arrested after presenting a false insurance card at police headquarters while attempting to retrieve her motor vehicle which had been impounded for motor vehicle violation on a previous date.  She was processed and charged with possession of a fraudulent insurance card and was then released on her own recognizance. 

On Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at 10:59 pm, Ptl. Ernest Schmidt arrested and charged Nicole J. Burger, 29, of Berkeley Heights with motor vehicle violations. Burger was the operator of a 1998 Dodge wagon and was found to hold an outstanding warrant out of Chatham Township totaling $165.00.  She was brought to police headquarters and charged with operating an unregistered vehicle, driving while suspended, and having no liability insurance.  Burger was then released after posting bail. 

On Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at 12:54 am, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Jason E. Mosely, 18, of Columbus with motor vehicle violations.  Mosely was the operator of a 1999 Chevy and was found to hold an outstanding warrant out of Seaside Heights totaling $1,000.00.  He was brought to police headquarters and charged with being an unlicensed driver and improper maintenance of lamps.  Mosely was unable to post bail and was subsequently turned over to the Seaside Heights Police Department. 

On Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 11:07 pm, Berkeley Heights Officers responded to the area Grassman Place to investigate a report of individuals damaging mailboxes.  Officers were able to obtain a description of the vehicle involved and a short time later, Ptl. Ernest Schmidt located the vehicle in the downtown area.  Taken into custody were four 17 year old juveniles who were brought to police headquarters.  The investigation revealed a total of 11 mailboxes damaged on Grassman Place, Kilarney Drive and Baldwin Drive.  The four juveniles were turned over to their parents and the incident has been referred to the Youth Aid Unit.

August 26, 2005 

On August 20, 2005, at 1:28 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Mark G. Marino, 27, of New Providence with motor vehicle violations.  Marino was the operator of a 200 Jeep and when stopped was found to be driving while intoxicated after the officer conducted field sobriety tests.  He was brought to police headquarters, processed and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and crossing over a double yellow line.  He was given a court date to appear and released into the custody of a friend. 

On August 23, 2005 at 2:04 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged David E. Sposobiec, 39, of Berkeley Heights with criminal and motor vehicle violations.  Sposobiec was the operator of a 1986 Volvo that was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  Sposobiec then exited the vehicle and fled on foot, at which time he also attempted to throw suspected heroin from his pocket as he ran.  He was apprehended after a short foot pursuit and was placed under arrest with the assistance of Ptl. Ron DeSimoni.  Officers then recovered the suspected heroin, along with crack/cocaine and drug paraphernalia.  He was transported to Overlook Hospital due to suspected drug use and after being released was brought to police headquarters and processed and was charged with the following criminal complaints:Possession of crack/cocaine under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of hypodermic needles, failure to deliver CDS to a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.He was also charged with the following motor vehicle charges:Fictitious Plates, unregistered vehicle, maintenance of lamps, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, driving while suspended, unlicensed driver, no insurance, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, fraudulent inspection sticker, and driving while under the influence of a controlled substance.  Sposobiec was later released on his own recognizance. 

On Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at 6:36 pm, Ptl. Ernest Schmidt arrested Justin M. Rattigan, 22, of Whitehouse Station.  Rattigan was a passenger in a 1993 Honda and was found hold an outstanding warrant out of Clinton Township in the amount of $20,000.00. He was transported to police headquarters and processed and released to Hunterdon County authorities.

August 15, 2005 

On Thursday, August 4, 2005, Ptl. Dan Cuocci and members of the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad responded to the area of 434 Springfield Ave. on a report of a one car motor vehicle accident.  Upon arrival it was determined that the operator of a 1999 Ford Explorer, Wayne N. Fabricius, 58, of Green Brook was traveling east on Springfield Ave., and left the roadway striking a tree and a brick wall. The investigation revealed that the driver was talking on his cell phone when he lost control of his vehicle.  He was transported to Overlook Hospital with minor injuries and was issued summonses for careless driving and operating a motor vehicle while using a cell phone.   

On Wednesday, August 10, 2005, Ptl. Michael Nelson responded to a Springfield Ave. business to investigate a report of a theft.  The investigation revealed insurance cards, registration cards and a socket set valued at $50.00 was taken from a work truck which was parked in the rear of the business.  The matter has been referred to the Investigations Division for further investigation.

August 1, 2005 

On Monday, July 25, 2005 at 5:10 pm, Ptl. Michael Delia responded to a report of a theft from a motor vehicle and an attempted theft of the motor vehicle at the Connell Corporate Center.  Upon speaking with the victim he observed the driver’s side window of a 2006 Nissan Maxima had been shattered and the ignition and steering column had been tampered with.  Additionally, the victim’s wallet containing his driver’s license, credit cards and $200.00 cash was missing from the motor vehicle.  The incident is currently being investigated by the Investigations Division. 

On Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at 7:03 am, Sgt. Frank Fortunato arrested and charged Jameson M. Matunas, 18, of Berkeley Heights with criminal and motor vehicle violations.  Matunas was found to have operated a 1998 Chevy Camaro while intoxicated and was placed under arrest.  He was subsequently found to be in possession of marijuana, rolling papers and a marijuana pipe.  He was processed at police headquarters and was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Possession of Under 50 grams of Marijuana and Possession of drug paraphernalia. 

On Friday, July 29, 2005, Ptl. William Ives investigated a report of a theft form the Berkeley Swim Club.  The manager reported that between the hours of 8 am and 7 pm on July 29th, $857.00 in currency had been stolen from the main office.  The matter is currently being investigated by the Investigations Division. 

On Saturday, July 30, 2005, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Matthew A. Stark, 22, of Plainfield due to outstanding warrants and motor vehicle violations.  Stark was the operator of a 1993 Honda and was found to have outstanding warrants out of North and South Plainfield totaling $339.00.  He was brought to police headquarters and charged with motor vehicle violations and released after posting bail. 

On Sunday, July 31, 2005, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Ibn O. Warren, 23, of East Orange with motor vehicle and criminal violations.  Warren was the operator of a 2005 Toyota and was subsequently found to be in possession of marijuana after the officer observed the CDS in plain view.  Warren also provided false information to the officer and was positively identified at police headquarters utilizing the police department AFIS system.  Warren was found to hold $5,250.00 in warrants out of Newark for motor vehicle and criminal charges.  He was charged in Berkeley Heights with motor vehicle violations, possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, and obstruction of a police officer.  Warren’s bail was set at $1,500.00 and he was lodged in the Union County Jail.

July 5, 2005 

On Monday, June 27, 2005 at 8:26 pm, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Shawn C. Reddick, 34, of Hillside.  Reddick was the operator of a 2003 Ford and was stopped after the officer determined that he held outstanding warrants out of Newark and Metuchen totaling $1500.00.  He was also found to have a no bail warrant out of Union County and brought to police headquarters and processed and was later turned over to the Union County Sheriffs Department. 

On Monday, June 27, 2005 at 11:30 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged a 17 year juvenile from Berkeley Heights with driving while intoxicated.  The juvenile was operating a 2002 Jeep and was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  He was found to be intoxicated, arrested and was processed at police headquarters.  The juvenile was charged with speeding, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated and was subsequently released to his parents. 

On Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at 10:52 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Robert A. Austin, 29, of Plainfield with motor vehicle and drug offenses.  Austin was the operator of a 2000 Honda and was found to be in possession of marijuana and an open container of an alcoholic beverage after Sgt. Deitch observed a marijuana cigarette in plain view on the passenger side floorboard.  He was brought to police headquarters and charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, improper maintenance of lamps, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, and consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.  Austin was given a court date and released on his own recognizance. 

On Thursday, June 30, 2005 at 10:53 pm. Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Thomas Perez, 42, of Long Hill Township with motor vehicle offenses.  Perez was the operator of a 1993 Ford that was stopped on Plainfield Ave.  He was found to be intoxicated and brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Perez was then released into the custody of a friend. 

On Monday, July 4, 2005 at 2:15 am, Ptl. Ed Ammerlaan and Ptl. Michael Gallaro responded to a Baldwin Dr. address on a report of an individual entering a motor vehicle attempting a theft from it.  Ptl. Ammerlaan observed the suspect vehicle involved, which was described as a silver late model Jeep Liberty, backed into a driveway on Diamond Hill Rd., at which time the vehicle and three suspects, all described as young black males, fled south on Diamond Hill Rd. onto to I-78 East, where Ptl. Ammerlaan pursued into Springfield Township and subsequently terminated the pursuit.  The suspect vehicle was reported to be stolen out of Irvington the next day.  A vehicle at the Diamond Hill Rd. location was entered and the only item missing at the time of the report was a box of cigars.  The matter has been referred to the Investigations Division.

June 27, 2005 

On Monday, June 20, 2005 at 4:35 pm, Sgt. John DiPasquale, Ptl. Brian Jordan and Det. Mark Stallone apprehended three juveniles who had set a fire in the woods in near the Mead St. area.  All three juveniles were from Berkeley Heights, two were 15 years of age and the third was 16 years of age.  The fire was contained to a small area and was extinguished by the police officers and members of the Berkeley Heights Fire Department.  The three juveniles were transported to police headquarters and processed and released to their parents.  The incident has been referred the Youth Aid Unit. 

On Monday, June 20, 2005 at 8:07 pm, Ptl. Ernest Schmidt arrested and charged Lance L. Bradley, 36, of Greensboro, NC, with motor vehicle charges.  Bradley was the operator of a 1999 Honda and was stopped for motor vehicle violation at which time it was discovered that he was wanted by North Plainfield for failing to appear in court.  The warrant out of North Plainfield was in the amount of $750.00.  He was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged with speeding and driving with a suspended license.  Bradley was then released after posting bail.  

On Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at 8:38 am, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Mumin A. Conley, 30, of Plainfield with motor vehicle violations.  Conley was the operator of a 2002 Honda and was found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest in the amount of $155.00 out of Plainfield during the course of a motor vehicle stop.  He was brought top police headquarters and charged with speeding and improper display of plates and was released after posting bail. 

On Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at 10:13 am, Ptl. Jeanne Marie Fagan responded to a Baldwin Dr. residence on a report of vandalism.  The initial investigation revealed that someone had spray painted the resident’s mailbox and the area in on the street in front of the residence between the hours of 8:00 pm on June 21st and 7:00 am on June 22nd

On Wednesday, June 22, 2005 at 11:18 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch and Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested 3 juveniles from Berkeley Heights for underage possession of alcohol.  The juveniles were located at Hamilton Terrace School and found to be in possession of a case of beer.  All three were transported to police headquarters and released into the custody of their parents.  The matter has been referred to the Youth Aid Unit. 

On Thursday, June 23, 2005 at 10:21 am, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci arrested and charged April Sheehy, 29, of Linden with motor vehicle violations.  Sheehy was the operator of a 1997 Ford that was stopped for motor vehicle violations, at which time Sheehy was found to hold an outstanding no bail warrant out of Union County.  She was brought to police headquarters and charged with improper backing and improper maintenance of lamps.  Sheehy was then released into the custody of the Union County Sheriffs Department. 

On Friday, June 24, 2005 at 11:00 am, Ptl. Andrew Glaydura arrested and charged Miguel A. Ramos-Guridy, 33, of Plainfield with motor vehicle violations.  Ramos-Guridy was the operator of a 2001 Nissan that was stopped for motor vehicle violations, at which time he was found to hold an outstanding warrant out of South Plainfield in the amount of $800.00.  Ramos-Guridy was brought to police headquarters and charged with operating an unregistered vehicle, and driving while suspended.  He was then released after posting bail.

June 13, 2005 

On Wednesday, June 8, 2005, Ptl. William Ives arrested and charged Michael Bess, 24, of Jersey City with motor vehicle violations.  Bess was the operator of a 1990 Plymouth and was found to have 5 outstanding warrants out of Jersey City, Elizabeth and Berkeley Heights totaling $2530.00.  He was processed at police headquarters and charged with failure to inspect a motor vehicle and driving while suspended.  Bess was subsequently turned over to the Jersey City Police Department. 

On Thursday, June 9, 2005 at 8:52 pm, Ptl. Dan Gara responded to a Sussex Rd. address to investigate a report of a theft.  The victim reported that between the hours of 3:30 pm and 7:30 pm, someone had entered his motor vehicle and stolen his NJ State PBA shield, vehicle registration, and PBA shield registration.  The total value of all items was estimated at $20.00. 

On Friday, June 10, 2005 at 8:00 am, Ptl. William Ives investigated a report of a theft at the Walgreens construction site on Springfield Ave.  The site manager reported the theft of approximately 64 concrete blocks between the hours of 9:30 pm, Wednesday, June 1st and 7:30 am Friday, June 10th.  There was no approximate value given at the time of the report.  The matter has been referred to the Investigations Division. 

On Friday, June 10, 2005 at 10:47 am, Ptl. Andrew Glaydura investigated a motor vehicle accident involving a single vehicle which resulted in the injury to the driver.  The operator, Eleanor T. Witkowski, 71, of Scotch Plains, was operating a 1999 Buick and traveling east on Glenside Ave.  The investigation revealed that Witkowski lost control of the vehicle on the wet pavement while negotiating a bend and left the roadway.  The vehicle then struck a tree, and the driver sustained minor head injuries.  She was transported to Overlook Hospital by the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad. 

On Saturday, June 11, 2005, Ptl. Jeanne Marie Fagan investigated a report of a stolen bicycle from Colummbia School.  A Berkeley Heights resident reported that on or about May 30, 2005, his juvenile son had left his bicycle parked in the bike rack on the north side of the school and upon his return it was missing.  The bicycle was described as a black and gray twenty one speed Schwinn valued at $200.00.

May 24, 2005 

On Monday, May 16, 2005, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci responded to Mountain Park School, 55 Fairfax Dr., to investigate a report of criminal mischief.  The investigation revealed that an individual kicked in a garage door in the rear of the building, knocking off its track and causing two large dents.  The incident occurred between the hours of 3:00 pm on Friday, May 13, 2005 and 8:30 am on Monday, May 16, 2005.  The matter has been referred to the Investigations Division. 

On Thursday, May 19, 2005 at 5:13 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged James Carthy, 25, of Berkeley Heights with motor vehicle and drug charges.  Carthy was operating a 1996 Ford pickup truck in a reckless manner when stopped by Ptl. DeSimoni and was found to be in possession of a hypodermic needle in the motor vehicle.  Carthy was brought to police headquarters and charged with reckless driving, failure to observe a traffic signal and possession of a hypodermic needle.  He was released on his own recognizance with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Friday, May 20, 2005 , Sgt. John DiPasquale investigated a report of a burglary and theft from a Beech Ave. residence.  The victims reported a theft of a television and DVD player with an unknown value at this time.  The theft occurred during the hours of 7 am and 7 pm.  There were no signs of forced entry and the incident is being investigated by the Investigations Division. 

On Sunday, May 22, 2005 at 10:50 pm, Ptl. Dan Gara arrested and charged John C. McHugh, 47, of New Ringold PA, with motor vehicle and drug charges.  McHugh was involved in a one car motor vehicle accident while operating a 1998 Toyota and was found to be intoxicated and in possession of marijuana.  McHugh was transported to police headquarters and charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of an open container of alcohol, consumption of alcohol while driving, possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.  McHugh was later released into the custody of a friend and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

May 16, 2005 

On Thursday, May 12, 2005 at 3:12 pm, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged Taffarie Laing, 23, of Plainfield.  Laing was the operator of a 1997 Ford that was stopped for a motor vehicle violation.  He was found to have two outstanding warrants out of New Milford and Franklin Lakes totaling $994.00 and was taken into custody.  Laing was processed at police headquarters and charge with failure to inspect a motor vehicle and was released after posting bail.

May 9, 2005 

On Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at 9:26 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged James Howard, 35, of Newark with motor vehicle and criminal offenses.  Howard was the operator of a 1996 Acura that was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  Howard then provided Sgt. Deitch with false information regarding his identity and after further investigation, Sgt. Deitch was able to determine his true identity, that his driver’s license was suspended, and that he was wanted out of Newark on outstanding warrants.  Howard was arrested and processed at police headquarters.  He was charged with hindering apprehension, possession of a fraudulent inspection sticker, driving while suspended, unlicensed driver, expired insurance card, failure to display driver’s license, failure to inspect, and operating a motor vehicle with a cracked windshield.  Bail was set on Howard at $1500.00 by Municipal Court Judge Donald Bogosian.  Howard was also held on three outstanding Newark warrants totaling $810.00.  He was later transferred into the custody of the Union County Sheriff and transported to the Union County Jail. 

On Saturday, May 7, 2005, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci investigated a report of criminal mischief at a Mead Street address.  The victim reported that a beer bottle had been thrown through his front window between the hours of 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm.  The investigation into the incident is continuing.

May 2, 2005

On Thursday, April 28, 2005 at 8:01 am, Ptl. William Ives arrested Kaleer R. Williams, 22, of Plainfield, after he was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Plainfield in the amount of $350.00. Ptl. Ives came across Williams walking on Diamond Hill Rd. during rush hour traffic after police headquarters received a call describing an individual walking on the roadway.  Upon checking his identification, he was found to have an outstanding warrant.  Williams was processed at police headquarters and released into the custody of the Plainfield Police Department. 

On Friday, April 29, 2005 at 11:43 pm, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Paul C. Clark, 50, of Plainfield, with driving while intoxicated.  Clark was operating a 2003 VW when he was stopped for motor vehicle violations and found to be driving while intoxicated.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Clark was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a friend. 

On Saturday, April 30, 2005 at 3:52 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Michelle Dorsi, 24, of Watchung with driving while intoxicated.  Dorsi was operating a 2003 Saturn when she was stopped for motor vehicle violations and found to be intoxicated. She was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with speeding, careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Dorsi was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a family member.

April 25, 2005

On Monday, April 18, 2005 at 9:09 pm, Ptl. Ernie Schmidt arrested and charged Christopher C. Griffin, 22, of Bound Brook with criminal and motor vehicle charges.  Griffin was the operator of a 2000 Ford that was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  During the course of the stop, drug paraphernalia was observed in the vehicle and a subsequent search revealed five wax folds of suspected heroin in the vehicle.  Griffin was brought to police headquarters and charged with possession of heroin, speeding, improper turn, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, driving while suspended and careless driving.  He was given a court date to appear in Union County Superior Court and released into the custody of a family member. 

On Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at 7:54 pm, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested Nadeen E. Richardson, 38, of South Orange.  Richardson was the operator of a 1995 Ford and was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Scotch Plains.  She was brought to police headquarters and processed and released after posting bail. 

On Saturday, April 23, 2005 at 11:59 pm, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Christopher M. Travers, 42, of Morristown, NJ with driving while intoxicated.  Travers was the operator of a 2002 Chevy and was placed under arrest after being stopped for motor vehicle violations.  He was brought to police headquarters and charged with disregard of an officer’s signal, failure to exhibit documents, refusal to submit to the breathalyzer, and driving while intoxicated.  Travers was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a friend.  

On Sunday, April 24, 2005 at 8:23 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Ernestine Gourdine. 58, of Newark on outstanding warrants.  Gourdine was the operator of a 1999 Ford and was found to have a no bail warrant out of Hudson County after being stopped for motor vehicle violations.  She was brought to police headquarters and charged with operating an unregistered vehicle and driving while suspended.  Gourdine was then released into the custody of the Hudson County Sheriffs Department. 

On Sunday, April 24, 2005 at 11:01 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Anthony Ikonomo, 18 of Millburn and James G. Mayfield, 23, of Union with drug and motor vehicle charges.  Ikonomo was the operator of a 1993 Toyota and both parties were found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia, namely marijuana pipes, after Sgt. Deitch detected an odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the motor vehicle.  A small amount of marijuana was found in the possession of Ikonomo.  Both individuals were brought to police headquarters and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.  Ikonomo was also charged with possession of marijuana, speeding and improper maintenance of lamps.  They were then given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released on their own recognizance.

April 18, 2005 

On Monday, April 11, 2005 at 6:55 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni and Ptl. Donato Minicozzi responded to the Mountain Ave. residence of Louanne Cupo-Denny, 44, and her son, Alexander Denny, 18, attempting to serve an outstanding Berkeley Heights warrant in the amount of $710.00.  Louanne Cupo-Denny provided false information to the officers as to the whereabouts of her son, and a short time later he was observed by officers leaving the residence at which time he was placed under arrest.  Alexander Denny was brought to police headquarters and processed and released after posting bail.  Louanne Cupo-Denny was later charged with a Township Ordinance violation for interfering with an officer of the law and was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Monday, April 11, 2005 at 11:58 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Jonah J. Lawrence, 31, of Plainfield with motor vehicle and drug charges.  Lawrence was the operator of a 1991 Honda and was stopped for motor vehicle violations at which time Ptl. DeSimoni detected an odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle.  A search of Lawrence and the motor vehicle revealed a small amount of marijuana and cocaine.  He was brought to police headquarters and charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of cocaine, failure to maintain lane, driving while suspended, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, and failure to wear a seatbelt.  Lawrence was then released on his own recognizance. 

On Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 3:54 pm, Ptl. Daniel Cuocci arrested and charged Charles W. Young Jr, 44, of Summit with driving while intoxicated.  Young was the operator of a 2002 Jeep Liberty and was stopped by police after a citizen contacted police headquarters regarding the operation of his vehicle.  Young was brought to police headquarters and charged with driving while intoxicated and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle.  He was released to a family member and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Thursday, April 14, 2005 at 12:06 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro apprehended a burglary suspect wanted by Greenbrook Police.  Ptl. Gallaro observed the suspect on Plainfield Ave. operating a 1994 Honda, after receiving a radio broadcast from Greenbrook Police Department describing the suspect vehicle.  Ptl. Gallaro then stopped the vehicle, operated by Daniel I. Moss, 32, of Berkeley Heights, and arrested him.  Greenbrook Police then responded to Berkeley Heights and took custody of Moss, charging him with burglary.  

On Thursday, April 14, 2005 at 4:40 am, Ptl. Ed Ammerlaan responded to a Gallinson Dr. address on a report of an unknown intoxicated individual knocking on a resident’s front door.  Upon his arrival he located the suspect, Jeremy Reuben, 25, of Morristown, standing on the rear deck of the residence.  Reuben was taken into custody and charged with a Township Ordinance for disturbing the peace and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.  He was later transported to Overlook Hospital for observation due to his condition. 

On Thursday, April 14, 2005 at 9:00 pm, Sgt. Brad Countryman arrested and charged Jerilyn Campbell, 45, of Scotch Plains with driving while intoxicated.  Campbell was the operator of a 2002 Toyoyta and was stopped for a motor vehicle violation.  She was taken to police headquarters and charged with failure to maintain lane and driving while intoxicated.  Campbell was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a friend. 

On Friday, April 15, 2005 at 1:15 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Chastity S. Dillard, 29, of Edison with driving while intoxicated.  Dillard was the operator of a 1994 Nissan and was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  She was taken to police headquarters and charged with failure to exhibit documents, reckless driving, and driving while intoxicated.  Dillard was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a family member.

April 11, 2005 

On Thursday, April 7, 2005 at 9:27 am, Ptl. William Ives arrested Diego Castro, 40, of North Plainfield on an outstanding warrant.  Castro was the operator of a 1977 Oldsmobile and was found to have a $200.00 warrant out of Mountainside.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and released after posting bail. 

On Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 12:49 am, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Lawrence G. Cox, 26, of Union on motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Cox was the operator of a 1988 Ford and was found to be operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Cox was also found to have under 50 grams of marijuana in his possession subsequent to being placed under arrest.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with improper maintenance of lamps, driving while intoxicated and possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 11:16 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested Sharod H. Durham, 27 of Irvington on an outstanding warrant out of Newark in the amount of $500.00.  Durham was the operator of a 2000 Suzuki motorcycle and was charged with driving an unregistered vehicle, improper display of license plates, and operating a motor vehicle without liability insurance.  He was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released. 

On Sunday, April 10, 2005 at 2:04 am, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Isaac S. Brizuela-Monge, 28, of Orange with driving while intoxicated.  Brizuela-Monge was the operator of a 1991 Chevy Minivan and was found to be operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with failure to maintain lane, careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Brizuela-Monge was then given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released into the custody of a friend.

April 4, 2005 

On Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 8:45 am, Ptl. Andrew Glaydura arrested and charged Akbar D. Nasir, 26, of Newark with motor vehicle violations.  Nasir was operating a 1996 Plymouth and was stopped for motor vehicle violations at which time Ptl. Glaydura discovered that Nasir had two outstanding warrants out of Roselle and Fanwood Municipal Courts totaling $800.00.  Nasir was transported to police headquarters and charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating a vehicle without liability insurance and driving while suspended.  Nasir was released after posting bail and was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 11:49 am, Ptl. William Ives arrested Jamie D. Jones, 24, of East Orange after a motor vehicle stop.  Jones  was found to have two outstanding warrants out of Montclair and Montville Municipal Courts totaling $393.00.  Jones was brought to police headquarters and processed and released after posting bail.  She was issued a summons for not having her driver’s license in her possession and given a court date for Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at 2:10 am Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Martin S. Moran, 30, of New Providence with driving while intoxicated and careless driving offenses.  Moran was the operator of a 1998 GMC pick up trick which was stopped by Ptl. Gallaro for a motor vehicle violation.  Moran was placed under arrest after failing field sobriety tests and was brought to police headquarters for processing.  He was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and was released into the custody of a family member. 

On Thursday , March 31, 2005 at 10:41 pm, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Kyle McKissock, 19, of Berkeley Heights with drug charges.  McKissock was the operator of a motor vehicle which was stopped by Sgt. Deitch.  Sgt Deitch detected the odor of burnt marijuana and subsequently found McKissock to be in possession of marijuana. McKissock was brought to police headquarters and charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.  He was released on his on recognizance and given a date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

March 29, 2004 

On Wednesday, March 2 2005 at 7:45 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested Alexander J. Denny, 18, of Berkeley Heights on an outstanding Berkeley Heights warrant in the amount of $458.00.  Denny was observed near the Berkeley Heights train station by Sgt. Deitch who was aware of the outstanding warrant.  Denny was taken into custody and brought to police headquarters where he was processed and released after posting bail.

On Friday, March 25, 2005, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi investigated a report of criminal mischief to a Spring Ridge Drive residence.  The investigation revealed that between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm the previous evening, someone had thrown eggs at the victim’s 2002 Volvo V70.

On Friday, March 25, 2005 at 12:45 pm Ptl. Donato Minicozzi arrested and charged McKanley U. Black, 20, of Summit with theft by deception.  Officers were called to the Stop and Shop supermarket after Black was detained by store personnel trying to pass counterfeit currency.  Black allegedly attempted to purchase items in the store and tried to make change with $170.00 in counterfeit currency.  He was transported to police headquarters, processed and interviewed by members of the Berkeley Heights Police Department and the United States Secret Service.  Black was released with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

On Friday, March 25, 2005 at 3:44 pm Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested Takasha S. Rudolph, 33 and Michele L. Brown, 29, both of Newark, on outstanding warrants for their arrests.  Rudolph was the operator of a 1987 Chevrolet which was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was found to have an outstanding no bail warrant out of Union County.  Brown was the passenger in the motor vehicle and was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Plainfield in the amount of $367.00.  Both individuals were brought to police headquarters and processed.  Rudolph was charged with improper display of license plates and two counts of not having her children restrained in booster seats.  Rudolph and Brown were then turned over to the Union County Sheriffs Department and the Plainfield Police Department respectively.

On Sunday, March 27, 2005 at 4:03 pm, Ptl. William Ives and Ptl. Andrew Glaydura responded to the Berkeley Cinema on a report of a 3 year old child who was choking.  Upon arrival, Ptl. Ives observed the mother, Patricia Guerin of Berkeley Heights, holding the child Jordan Guerin.  The mother was yelling that her child was not breathing at which time Ptl. Ives immediately assessed the situation, seeing that the child was unconscious, not breathing and her lips were turning blue.  Mrs. Guerin advised the officers that her child was eating popcorn and may have choked on it.  Ptl. Ives then performed the child Heimlich maneuver, dislodged the foreign object, and provided several rescue breaths.  After approximately one minute, the child began to take slow breaths and was conscious and crying. The Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad arrived at which time the child and her mother were transported to Overlook Hospital.

March 21, 2005 

On Tuesday, March 15, 2005, Sgt. Frank Fortunato investigated a report of a theft from a local restaurant.  The victim reported that a bread cabinet, valued at approximately $50.00 had been stolen sometime overnight between the hours of 3 pm and 6 am from the Station Street location.   

On Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 12:00 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested Darnelle A. Gibbs, 21, of Irvington, during a motor vehicle stop.  Gibbs was operating a 1993 Mitsubishi and was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Mountainside in the amount of $400.00 after Ptl. DeSimoni checked his license plate on his patrol car mobile data computer.  Gibbs was brought to police headquarters and processed and released after posting bail. 

On Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 12:34 pm, Ptl. Donato Minicozzi took custody of Daniel I. Cohen, 64, of Manahattan, after Cohen was brought to the Berkeley Heights Police Department by a bail agent employed by Drigon Investigations.  Cohen was wanted in Berkeley Heights on an outstanding warrant dating to 2001 in the amount of $5,050.00.  He was processed and released after posting bail. 

On Friday, March 18, 2005 at 8:35 pm, Ptl. Jeanne Marie Fagan and Ptl. Patrick Moran responded to a Ralph Place address to investigate a report of a loud party.  Upon their arrival numerous juveniles fled the scene and twenty juveniles were detained.  Four cases of beer were located in the residence with numerous open containers of alcohol.  The parents of the juveniles were contacted and the juveniles were released into their custody.  The incident has been referred to the juvenile division. 

On Sunday, March 20, 2005 at 12:11 am, Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Joseph J. Carone, 29, of Brooklyn NY with driving while intoxicated.  Carone was the operator of a motor vehicle stopped by Ptl. Gallaro and was subsequently found to be intoxicated after failing field sobriety tests.  He was transported to police headquarters and processed.  Carone was charged with careless driving, refusal to submit to the breathalyzer, and driving while intoxicated.  Carone was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and was released into the custody of a family member. 

March 14, 2005

On Friday March 4, 2005 at 1:26 a.m., Ptl. Michael Gallaro arrested and charged Monica Johnson, 38, of Scotch Plains with driving while intoxicated.  Johnson was stopped as a result of a motor vehicle violation and found to be intoxicated after failing field sobriety tests.  She was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Johnson was then released into the custody of a family member and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

On Friday March 4, 2005 at 9:26 a.m., Ptl. William Ives arrested and charged Ruth Smith, 35, of Newark on outstanding warrants.  Smith was operating a 1999 Hyundai and was stopped for motor vehicle violations. Smith was found to have two outstanding warrants issued by the City of Trenton totaling $7,745.00.  She was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged with driving without insurance, unregistered motor vehicle, and driving while suspended. 

On Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at 10:02 a.m., Ptl. Brian Jordan arrested and charged Heral L. Kemp, 25, of Union with motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Kemp was stopped for motor vehicle violations while operating a 1995 Mazda and was found to be driving with a suspended license.  When asked to produce vehicle credentials, Kemp gave Ptl. Jordan a fraudulent insurance identification card.  Kemp was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged with driving while suspended, uninsured motor vehicle and possession of a fraudulent insurance card.  Kemp was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court and released on his own recognizance.

March 3, 2005 

On Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at 7:28 am, Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested Alexander J. Denny, 18, of Berkeley Heights on outstanding warrants.  Denny was a passenger in a motor vehicle which was stopped after Sgt. Deitch recognized him, knowing that there were two outstanding Berkeley Heights warrants in the amount of $1,308.00.  Denny was brought to police headquarters and processed and released after posting bail. 

On Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at 9:31 a.m., Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Andre K. Solomon, 28, of East Orange with motor vehicle and criminal charges.  Solomon was the operator of a 1994 Dodge Intrepid and was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  During the course of the motor vehicle stop, Solomon was found to be holding an outstanding warrant out of Orange in the amount of $726.00 and was also in possession of under 50 grams of marijuana.  Solomon was transported to police headquarters and charged with driving while suspended, improper maintenance of lamps, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, and possession of under 50 grams of marijuana.  Solomon was released after posting bail and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court. 

On Thursday, March 3, 2005 at 12:09 a.m., Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested Michael T. Patterson, 29, of Plainfield on an outstanding no bail warrant for contempt out of Union County.  Patterson was operating a 1987 Ford when Ptl. Desimoni conducted a random license plate check on his mobile data computer and received the information indicating that Patterson was a wanted person.  Paterson was brought to police headquarters and held in the municipal holding facility.  He was released to the custody of the Union County Sheriffs Department in the morning.

February 28, 2005 

On Tuesday, February 15, 2005, Ptl. Michael Nelson arrested and charged Ricardo Simmons, 31, of East Orange with obstructing a police officer as a result of an investigation due to a dispute.  During the course of the investigation he provided police with fraudulent information regarding his identity.  Simmons was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged.  He was released and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

On Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 12:52 a.m., Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged a 17 year old juvenile from Plainfield on motor vehicle and criminal charges.  The juvenile was stopped as a result of a motor vehicle violation and found to be in possession alcohol and marijuana in addition to having a suspended driver’s license.  He was also found to have an outstanding warrant out of Wharton in the amount of $1,500.00. The juvenile was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged with underage possession of alcohol and possession of marijuana.  He was also charged with the following motor vehicle offenses: failure to maintain lane, license plate light out, driving while suspended, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle, and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.  The juvenile was released to his guardian after bail was posted.

On Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at 7:36 p.m. Sgt. Brad Countryman investigated a motor vehicle accident which involved a pedestrian being struck on Springfield Ave.  The investigation revealed that Donald L. Williamson, 64, of Berkeley Heights was traveling east on Springfield Ave. operating a 1996 Ford Windstar Minivan, when Kunmi L. Kim, 62, of Warren crossed the roadway and was struck by the motor vehicle.  Kim was transported to University Hospital in Newark with multiple injuries.  No charges were filed against either party.

February 15, 2004

On Tuesday, February 8, 2005, a Governor Livingston High School student reported the theft of her purse to Ptl. Michael Nelson.  The victim reported that she had left her purse unattended in a classroom for a short period of time and upon her return the purse was missing.  A cell phone and approximately $10.00 in cash were in the purse with the total value stolen approximately $60.00.  The matter has been referred to the Juvenile Officer for further investigation.

On Thursday, February 10, 2005, Sgt. Frank Fortunato arrested and charged Nanif R. Wynn, 20, of Newark with criminal and motor vehicle violations.  Wynn was the operator of a 1993 Ford Thunderbird and was  stopped during the course of a mobile motor vehicle inspection conducted by the Berkeley Heights Police Department in conjunction with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission.  Wynn produced a fraudulent insurance identification card and was subsequently arrested and his motor vehicle was towed.  Wynn was brought to police headquarters and charged with improper display of license plates, improper maintenance of tail lights, and possession of a fraudulent insurance card.  He was released and given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

On Friday, February 11, 2005 at 3:53 p.m., Ptl. Daniel Cuocci and the Berkeley Heights Fire Dept. along with the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad responded to McMane Ave. on a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a school bus and car which had caught on fire.  The investigation revealed that the school bus, which was operated by Rufus Smith, 47, of Newark had merged into traffic after letting students off.  A vehicle operated by Kelly Hufnagel, 30, of Berkeley Heights, which was a 2003 Chrysler Sebring, then struck the rear of the school bus and caught fire.  Hufnagel sustained a knee injury and was transported to Overlook Hospital and her vehicle was towed from the scene.  No other injuries were reported.

On Friday, February 11, 2005 at 8:33 p.m., Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charge Joseph Fusco, 47, and Lucille Amadeo, 45, both of Berkeley Heights with narcotics and motor vehicle charges.  Amadeo was the operator of a motor vehicle stopped for motor vehicle violations.  Fusco, the passenger, resisted Sgt. Deitch’s instructions and was subsequently found to have in his possession suspected cocaine and marijuana.  Amadeo was also found to have in her possession suspected cocaine and marijuana.  They were brought to police headquarters and processed.  Fusco was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, and failure to wear seatbelt.  Amadeo was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, improper maintenance of lamps, failure to wear seatbelt, and possession of CDS in a motor vehicle.  Both were released and given a court date to appear in Union County Superior Court.

On Friday, February 11, 2005 at 8:54 p.m., officers investigated a report of a hit a run accident at a Springfield Ave. business.  Ptl. Brian Jordan was able to locate the vehicle that left the scene on Martins Lane.  He subsequently located the operator of the vehicle,   Adrian I. Lewis, 34, of Berkeley Heights and charged her with leaving the scene of an accident.  She was given a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

On Sunday, February 13, 2005 at 2:01 am, Ptl. Brian Jordan arrested and charged Arthur Gotthardt, 37, of Allentown PA with driving while intoxicated.  Gotthardt was stopped while operating a 1999 Chevy on Plainfield Ave. and found to be intoxicated.  He was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to exhibit documents.  He was subsequently released into the custody of a friend with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

On Sunday, February 13, 2005 at 3:39 am, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Thomas R. Blume, 30, of Washington NJ with driving while intoxicated.  Blume was the operator of a 1999 Audi and was found to be intoxicated after he was stopped for motor vehicle violations.  He was brought to police headquarters and processed and charged with an unsafe lane change and driving while intoxicated.  Blume was then released into the custody of a friend with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

February 8, 2005

Berkeley Heights Police are investigating two reports of theft of Xenon headlights and the attempted theft of a motor vehicle which occurred sometime between 11:30 p.m. Sunday, February 6th and 7:00 a.m. Monday, February 7th.  A Twin Falls Road resident and a Diamond Hill Rd. resident both reported that the headlights were pried off the vehicles.  Both vehicles were late model Acuras with the value of each set of headlights approximated at $2000.00.  Another Twin Falls Rd. resident reported the attempted theft of his 2004 Infinity.  Officers reported that the vehicle had a punched door lock, however entry was not gained to the vehicle.  The incidents have been referred to the Investigations Division.

February 7, 2005

On Monday, January 31, 2005 at 7:22 p.m., Ptl. Michael Gallaro investigated a motor vehicle accident involving 2 vehicles.  The investigation revealed that Rachael Romond, 17, of Berkeley Heights was operating a 2002 VW Jetta and was traveling west on Springfield Ave. attempting a right turn off of the roadway.  Jodi Lada, 28, of Warren was operating a 2004 Honda Accord traveling behind Romond and struck Romond’s vehicle in the rear as Romond attempted to make the right turn.  Both vehicles sustained moderate damage and were able to be driven away from the scene.

On Friday, February 4, 2005 at 11:55 p.m., Sgt. Robert Deitch arrested and charged Ata Tavaly, 21, of New Providence with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana.  Tavaly was a passenger in a motor vehicle which was stopped for motor vehicle violations and was subsequently found to be in possession of marijuana after Sgt. Deitch detected an odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the motor vehicle.  Tavaly was brought to police headquarters and processed and released with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

January 31, 2005

 On Tuesday, January 26, 2005, at 9:40 a.m. Traffic Officer Michael Delia investigated a one car motor vehicle accident which occurred on Plainfield Ave.  The investigation revealed that Lauren Keller, 18, of Randolph, was traveling south on Plainfield Ave. in her 1988 Volvo, when she fell asleep causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike a tree.  Keller suffered numerous facial injuries and was treated at the scene and transported to Overlook Hospital by the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad.  Keller was charged with careless driving and failure to wear seatbelt and is to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

On Sunday, January 30, 2005 at 9:45 a.m. Ptl. Andrew Glaydura arrested and charged Crystal G. Harris, 19, of Plainfield with criminal and motor vehicle offenses.  Harris was stopped as a result of a motor vehicle violation and gave false information to Ptl. Glaydura regarding her name, address and date of birth.  She was subsequently arrested when her true identity was revealed and also found to have an outstanding warrant out of Watchung in the amount of $114.00.   Harris was charged with driving while suspended, improper u-turn, failure to inspect a motor vehicle and obstructing a police officer.  Harris posted bail and was released with a court date to appear in Berkley Heights Municipal Court.

On Sunday, January 30, 2005 at 11:39 p.m., Ptl. Ed Ammerlaan arrested and charged Kelly W. Phillips, 37, of Florham Park with motor vehicle offenses.  Mr. Phillips was involved in a single vehicle accident when his vehicle left the roadway on Springfield Ave. and struck a tree.  During the course of the investigation, Ptl. Ammerlaan determined the Phillips was intoxicated and placed him under arrest.  He was transported to police headquarters and processed and charged with careless driving and driving while intoxicated.  Phillips was lodged in the Berkeley Heights Municipal Jail until he was released in the morning with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.


January 17, 2005

On Wednesday, January 12, 2005, Ptl. Jeanne Marie Fagan arrested Hodis Jackson, 40, of Plainfield after Jackson arrived at police headquarters and turned himself in on outstanding Berkeley Heights warrants. Jackson was wanted on two Berkeley Heights warrants totaling $1250.00 and two Newark warrants totaling $343.00. He was processed and held in the Berkeley Heights Municipal Jail while awaiting transfer to the Union County Jail.

On Wednesday, January 12, 2005, Ptl. Ernie Schmidt investigated a two car motor vehicle accident on Mountain Ave. just east of Glenside Road. The investigation revealed that Michele Sharkin, of Summit was operating a 2001 Ford Expedition and was traveling east on Mountain Ave., when Hurngyn Tai, of Berkeley Heights, who was operating a 1992 Toyota Station Wagon, made a left turn in front of Sharkin into her path of travel. Tai was then transported to Overlook Hospital with minor injuries by the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad.

On Thursday, January 13, 2005, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni investigated a report of criminal mischief to the Berkeley Swim Club on Hamilton Ave. The investigation revealed that sometime between January 5 and January 12, 2005, several message boards and a kick plate to a restroom were damaged. Additionally, miscellaneous items were thrown into the pool. No value was estimated for the damage and the incident is under investigation by the Investigations Division.

On Thursday, January 13, 2005 at 3:21 pm, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Fareed M. Norman, 26, of Newark with criminal and motor vehicle violations. Norman was stopped for motor vehicle violations and provided Ptl. DeSimoni with a false name, address and date of birth. His identity was subsequently determined and he was placed under arrest for Hindering Apprehension or Prosecution, along with outstanding warrants out of Newark and Clark totaling $2000.00. Norman was also wanted on a no bail warrant out of Essex County and was transported to police headquarters for processing. Norman was charged with driving while suspended, failure to wear seatbelt, and hindering apprehension or prosecution and was turned over to the Essex County Sheriff’s Department.

On Monday, January 17, 2005 at 2:33 am, Ptl. Dan Gara arrested and charged Benjamin A. Wallerstein, 18, of Berkeley Heights with motor vehicle and criminal offenses. Wallerstein was stopped for careless driving and subsequently found to be in possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and alcohol. Wallerstein was brought to police headquarters and processed and was released with a court date to appear in Berkeley Heights Municipal Court.

January 10, 2005

On Monday, January 3, 2005, Ptl. Ron DeSimoni arrested and charged Ana M. Duarte-Payne, 44, of Scotch Plains with motor vehicle offenses. Duarte-Payne was found to have an outstanding warrant out of South Plainfield in the amount of $401.00 during the course of a motor vehicle stop. She was brought to police headquarters and charged with driving while suspended. Duarte-Payne was released with a court date after posting bail.

On Tuesday, January 4, 2004 at 8:30 pm, Ptl. Patrick Moran arrested Robert L. Stevens, 30, of Somerset on an outstanding warrant out of Irvington in the amount of $110.00. Stevens was stopped for making an illegal turn and was found to have the outstanding warrant. Stevens was brought to police headquarters and processed and released after posting bail.

On Wednesday, January 5, 2004 at 11:34 am, Ptl. Brian Jordan arrested and charged Loren M. Hamilton, 39, of New Providence with motor vehicle offenses. Hamilton was found to have an outstanding warrant out of Summit in the amount of $200.00 during the course of a motor vehicle stop. Hamilton was brought to police headquarters and charged with driving while suspended and operating a motor vehicle without liability insurance. Hamilton was released with a court date after posting bail.
